New Rental Hours and Locations


The dream of self-service is that products and services can be available 24/7, without requiring any assistance. We’re pleased to share that we’re continuing to move towards that goal by expanding our truck rental hours with Fetch.

Fetch trucks and vans are now available to rent anytime between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., 7 days a week.

Need to run an errand after work? Have an early-morning delivery? Want to return your vehicle after hours? It’s all possible with Fetch.

We’re also very pleased to share that we are continuing our expansion in Metro Atlanta with two new Fetch locations.

Truck rental — the prices you’ll actually pay when renting a truck

National truck rental companies will advertise vehicles for “$20/day!” — but, there’s a catch: these companies make all their money after you reserve your vehicle. Before renting a truck, make sure to understand what costs to realistically expect to pay when renting.

1. Base Rental Costs

Rental costs for your truck can range from $20 per day to $100+ per day, depending on the size of your truck. With most national truck-rental companies, a daily rental will include 24-hours of use of the vehicle. You will not receive any miles (or unlimited miles) with your rental.

Other things to ensure:

Is your rental guaranteed? Often times, rental agencies will not guarantee reservations and will overbook their vehicles. That means you may arrive to pick up your vehicle, and it isn’t available.

Late return fees: what are the fees for returning the vehicle late? Is there a “grace period?” If you return the vehicle 30-minutes late, are you charged for an extra hour or a full day? Can you return your truck anytime or only during primary business hours?

2. Miles

This is where most rental companies start to collect their profit. A few rental companies will include some amount of base miles in their rentals, but most rental companies will charge you a fee per mile that you drive.

This fee typically ranges from $0.69 cents to $1.59 per mile. If you drive just 50 miles, you’ll pay anywhere from $35 to $80 extra for your vehicle usage.

Make sure you know exactly what your per-mile pricing is with your rental agreement, and calculate the miles you expect to drive into your total trip costs.

3. Gas

With most truck-rental companies, you’re required to pay for the gas you use and also fill up the gas tank to its original state. This can be costly, and annoying.

Even if you only drive 10 miles, you’ll still need to fill up the gas. Otherwise, you can face gas-fill-up penalties.

This is an additional cost you’ll need to factor into your rental costs. For example, at $2/gallon, you can expect to spend $8-$16 for an average truck rental. You may also need to spend a bit extra to ensure there’s no question you’ve filled up the gas tank to its original state.

4. Insurance

Most truck rental companies want to sell you insurance to cover your rental. This is typically 100% profit for them!

Should you buy rental insurance? You’ll want to call your insurance company to determine if your personal auto insurance will cover your truck rental. Often, personal insurance policies do not cover the use of commercial vehicles such as trucks and vans.

If you personal insurance policy doesn’t cover you, it’s a good idea to purchase the insurance from your rental company. Driving uninsured means that you could face out-of-pocket expenses for any damage you cause to your rental vehicle, or other drivers, during your trip.

For example, if you get in a wreck with another driver, and you’re at fault, you’ll be liable for:

– Repairing or replacing your rental vehicle

– Repairing or replacing the other driver’s vehicle

– Any personal damage caused to the driver, such as medical bills

It’s not difficult to imagine these costs adding up to tens of thousands of dollars. Without insurance, you’re responsible for paying all of these costs out of your own pocket.

5. Underage renting

Under 25 years of age? Most rental companies will charge you an additional cost for renting with them. Typically, this ranges from $10 — $30.

6. Moving supplies

Truck rental agencies want to sell you boxes and tape, whether you need them or not. Again, these upsells are essentially pure profit, and you’ll be asked if you need to purchase any supplies.

If you do need boxes, tape, gloves and other supplies, it’s recommended to purchase them before your rental at a normal hardware-supply store.

7. Cleaning fees

As a renter, you’re responsible for returning your truck rental in its original condition. If you’ve had any spills or debris collect in your truck, be sure to clean them before returning your vehicle.

If your vehicle isn’t returned in a clean state, cleaning fees can range from $30 to $100.

Lastly, be sure not to smoke in your truck rental. Smoking requires a vehicle to be detailed and cleaned extensively, which can result in hundreds of dollars in cleaning fees.

8. Additional costs

Many rental companies will tack on additional fees, such as “recovery costs” — that can add anywhere from a few dollars to $10 to your rental. While these costs may seem minimal, they can add up.

9. Cancellation fees

Does the truck rental company offer free cancellation for your reservation? If not, you’ll be liable for the full cost of

Your base rental fee is only the starting point for what you can expect to pay for a truck rental. After your rental, mileage, gas and insurance, expect to pay $60 — $150 for a 24-hour rental.

Insider tips you need to know before renting a truck or van


Renting a truck or van is not like renting a regular passenger car. The same rules do not apply. Trucks and vans are typically considered “commercial vehicles.” Because of that, they are priced differently and have different insurance rules.

When renting a truck or van, here are the most important things to remember:

You should almost always buy the insurance

Most personal auto-insurance companies do not cover usage of commercial vehicles with a personal-insurance policy.

This means that if you rent a truck or van you could be driving uninsured. Get in a wreck? Total the vehicle? You could end up owing your rental company tens of thousands of dollars and even being liable for any damage caused to other drivers or parties.

Because of this, rental companies typically offer two different types of insurance:

  1. Insurance to cover damage to just the vehicle
  2. Insurance to cover personal and property damage (such as damage to others)

We recommend making sure you have at least state-minimum coverage and also have basic insurance to limit your exposure to damage to your rental vehicle. Even if you must purchase it from your rental company, it’s a worthwhile investment.

At Fetch, we include insurance for free with every rental.

Ask about per-mile pricing and other fees

Many truck rental companies advertise a low daily rate, but they then hit you with per mile pricing ranging from $0.69 to $1.09 per mile!

When picking up your vehicle, make sure you’ve verified if any miles are included with your rental and how much each additional mile will cost.

For example, take a rental where you’ll be traveling 50 miles. A $20 daily rental quickly turns into a $70 rental. And you haven’t even paid for gas or insurance, yet.

Make sure your vehicle is clean

If you don’t leave your vehicle reasonably clean, rental companies may charge you a cleaning fee, typically ranging from $25 — $100.

What’s the general rule for leaving your vehicle? Make sure any dirt or mess you’ve left behind can be cleaned with a vacuum. Stains on seats, spilled drinks on floor mats and anything requiring a scrubbing will typically lead to a cleaning fee.

Also, it’s best to leave pets at home. Unconstrained animals quickly scratch door panels, tear seats and stain vehicles.

Fill up the gas tank

Unfilled gas tanks are easy ways for rental companies to charge “filling” fees, ranging anywhere from $5 — $20, plus the cost of gas. Before you complete your rental check-in , make sure to ask about the gas fill-up fees.

Rental companies will typically charge for the act of filling up the vehicle, whether they have to add just a gallon or a full tank. They’ll also mark up the cost of the gas to increase the fees you pay.

If your rental company doesn’t provide gas, make sure to take a picture of the gas gauge before you start a rental and immediately when you return your rental. Of course, be sure to fill up your gas tank before returning.

At Fetch, we think this is not only inconvenient, but also a device used to increase the cost of your rental. We provide free gas with every rental and don’t require you to fill up.

Not all reservations are guaranteed

Unfortunately, many rental companies do not guarantee your reservation, and they may even over-book vehicles.

It’s not uncommon to reserve a truck and then show up to find your truck is not available. Rental companies do this to maximize their utilization, but it comes at the expense and inconvenience of you, the customer.

Even if you reserve a vehicle on a company’s website, make sure to call to ask about their reservation policy and ensure your vehicle will be available.

We hope these tips help you understand the differences in renting a truck/van as opposed to a personal vehicle (such as a sedan).

High Roof Cargo Vans Now Available

High roof cargo vans are now available

We’re delighted to share that we’ve added a new class of vehicles to our rental fleet: 9′ High Roof Cargo Vans. These are the largest vans available in our fleet, and they are ideal for moving apartments, furniture, and extra large deliveries.


Our High Roof Cargo Vans pack 323 cubic feet of cargo space and are tall enough to stand up in. Unlike traditional box trucks, these vans provide plenty of space but are aerodynamic and easy to drive in the city or on the highway.

Our High Roof vans are available now, and like all Fetch rentals, they include free pre-paid gas and free insurance. Rent your moving van now with Fetch.

So, why is renting a car or truck such an awful, awful experience today?

Let’s break down the customer experience.

You search for a moving truck or cargo van to rent online. The rental website advertises $29.99 for an “all day” rate. Looks great! You book it.

On the day of your rental, you wake up early to drive 20 minutes to pick up your rental. After waiting in line for 15 minutes, you finally get to speak with someone. The attendant quickly tells you that it’s $29.99 for the day, plus $0.79 for each mile you drive.

Ouch. Your $30 rental just became a $75 rental.

Oh, and don’t forget to fill up the vehicle with gas, otherwise it’s a $15 fill-up fee plus $4 per gallon. And the 15-year-old truck you are renting gets 10 miles per gallon.

Now, you’re just getting started. Do you need any blankets, hand trucks, boxes, tape, or even a lucky rabbit foot? Every time you try to get a word out, it seems like the attendant is trying to sell you something else.

You’re a wrong turn away from financial bankruptcy

The most dangerous aspect of renting a truck is insurance.

If you’re involved in an accident, rental truck companies will actually hold you liable for the complete cost of replacing their trucks or vans. For example, if you decline to purchase their expensive auto insurance, and then accidentally cause major damage to the vehicle, you could owe tens of thousands of dollars to repair the cost of the vehicle. You’re one bad turn away from owing $30,000 for damage to your rental vehicle.

While your personal auto insurance will typically cover passenger rental cars, often times, personal insurance does not cover your use of vans or trucks. Rental companies will put customers in a 20-year-old truck, and say “have fun!” All while knowing how difficult these cars are to maneuver and that there’s a real chance significant damage occurs.

Think about it for a moment. You could lose your entire life savings because your rental company made insurance an optional purchase instead of including basic insurance in your rental.

Showing a low price for a vehicle, but charging for every small item such as miles and insurance, is a modern bait and switch scheme.

Advertise a low price for the vehicle, then charge the customer for everything else possible. Miles and gas are just the tip. Imagine thinking you were spending $50 for a van rental, but ending up owing tens thousands of dollars because you got in a wreck?

That’s the reality when renting from typical moving truck agencies.

When should you purchase auto rental insurance?


Insurance is one of the most confusing aspects of renting a car or truck. Most rental insurance companies will urge you to purchase their coverage and insurance, saying that your personal auto insurance policies will not cover you.

However, most personal auto-insurance policies do cover rental cars. Let’s explore how vehicle insurance works when used for rental cars and vans.

How personal auto insurance coverage works with rental vehicles

Most auto-rental agencies would have you believe that your personal auto insurance does not cover your rental vehicle. This often is not true.

Most personal auto-insurance policies will cover rental vehicles under a “temporary substitute” vehicle policy. This means that if you are not driving your primary vehicle, your coverage will temporarily transfer to your rental vehicle.

Yes, that’s correct. Your personal auto insurance will generally cover your rental car.

However, coverage for vans, trucks and “Uhauls” is less clear. For example, some auto insurance policies only cover vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds. Others will not cover “panel vans” that do not have windows. In our research, we called several insurance companies. Some companies covered vans and trucks up t0 10,000 pounds, while others did not provide coverage for these vehicles. There’s no conclusive answer, as every insurance company treats this differently.

When renting a truck or van, it’s best to call your insurance company to discuss if your specific situation is covered by your policy.

Will my personal auto insurance cover a rental car when used for business?

This is a gray area, but generally, the answer is yes.

For example, if you a flying to San Francisco for business meetings, your personal auto insurance will cover your general use of a rental car for getting to the hotel, driving to meetings around the city, etc.

However, your personal auto insurance will most likely not cover you when using your rental vehicle beyond typical personal usage. Examples of this include:

• Renting a vehicle specifically to transport equipment or cargo. For example, picking up supplies for your business.
• Renting a vehicle to facilitate business deliveries. For example, delivering pizza or flowers.

Under these business uses, your personal auto insurance will most likely not apply.

Does my credit card provide auto rental insurance?

Some credit cards, such as American Express, will provide a small amount of insurance for rental cars. However, the insurance provided is very narrow.

• The rental insurance typically only insures the rental vehicle. It does not provide insurance for personal damage, healthcare or damage caused to other parties while driving the rental vehicle.
• Credit card insurance will typically only cover standard passenger vehicles. Cargo vans, trucks, full-size SUVs and full-size vans are generally not covered.

When does it make sense to purchase car rental insurance?

There are scenarios where it does make sense to purchase the additional insurance and coverage from the car rental agency:

• You are using the rental vehicle for commercial or business purposes (as mentioned above).
• The rental vehicle weighs more than 10,000 pounds or falls under a vehicle class that your insurance does not cover(such as large trucks or vans). 
• You have recent claims against your personal auto insurance. Additional insurance may prevent another claim and help you keep your insurance in good order.
• You aren’t comfortable driving your rental vehicle. Especially when renting moving vans or trucks, the probability of a scratch, dent or even an accident increases substantially. Spending $25 for insurance to avoid filing a claim on your personal insurance may be a smart decision.

Why do car rental agencies tell me that my insurance doesn’t provide coverage?

The secret in the car-rental industry is that agencies make their profits on “counter” products. These are products they sell to you after your initial vehicle rental. These include items such as:

• Insurance
• Gas refills
• Driving mileage
• Packing boxes
• Furniture pads

Most rental agencies will try to “hook” you by offering the lowest base rental price, but then hitting you with fee after fee to actually use the vehicle. These “upsells” are how they turn a profit and are able to advertise vehicles for low daily prices.
